Notes guide Rose Ann Rowlett, who took this photo: "What a weirdly wonderful owl! It is said to feed on small mammals, birds, lizards, snakes, frogs, and large insects, particularly beetles, and it perches sideways on vertical saplings in the understory, capturing its prey in flight. Its quavering, musical calls filled the forest--after the noisy cicadas piped down."
