Surely one of our most beautiful songbirds, this species is sadly on the decline. In Pennsylvania, these lovely warblers frequently hybridize with Blue-winged Warblers, forming a fascinating mosaic of hybrids. This habitat has led to a shrinking zone of “pure” Golden-wings, and indeed, many individuals that look pure actually have hybrid ancestry as revealed by genetic studies. We will visit a few of the remaining strongholds for these gems in Pennsylvania. Photo by guide Tom Johnson.
