The Antpittas

The discovery of Jocotoco Antpitta, a very large and distinctive bird, stunned the birding world back in 1997. Perhaps because its song sounds rather like a Rufous-banded Owl, this bird had been overlooked in Ecuador, a country with a well-studied avifauna. Importantly, its discovery led to the establishment of a foundation to preserve its habitat and habitats of many other Andean birds. We usually see this glorious endangered bird on our SOUTHWESTERN ECUADOR SPECIALTIES: JOCOTOCO FOUNDATION RESERVES tour. Photo by participant Kathy Brown.
