The Tanagers

Guide Jesse Fagan's portrait of a male Western Tanager opens our gallery of gorgeous Tanagers, whose dazzling colors rekindle that childhood excitement on first seeing the really big box of crayons. Tanagers, restricted to the New World, reach their greatest diversity in the Andes, where a single mixed flock might hold nearly 20 species, showcasing as many colors as that box of crayons. Western Tanager is the northernmost tanager, nesting into Alaska, but we search for it mostly on our tours in Mexico, California, and Arizona.
