While individual islands are small, each holds an impressive amount of habitat diversity. The trade winds blow from the east steadily throughout most of the year, bringing moisture and rain that falls on the highlands. Here the highlands of St. Lucia show that extensive rainforest abounds—this is the home of many of St. Lucia's endemic species. In the lowlands and in leeward sites, a dry thorn-forest is found on many of the Lesser Antilles. Some of the birds of this dry forest are among the rarest on the islands.
