Barrow is a shorebirder's dream, a place where many species we associate with mudflats and sewage ponds farther south come to breed. Perhaps the neatest experience is to see the displays and hear the wonderful sounds these sandpipers and plovers make in the breeding areas. The male Pectoral Sandpiper inflates a sac in the neck, and then flies low over the ground giving a low-pitched hooting. Its an amazing sight!
