This is the White-tailed Ptarmigan, the king of the high elevation. A resident here even in winter, it is perfectly adapted to snow, cold, and difficult living. Fortunately when we visit in the summer there is no snow and not much cold. Thus far we have had very good luck finding this secretive and camouflaged bird up at the Whislters which, by the way, are named for the Marmots (and their sound) that live here.
