California is a wonderful and diverse state in which to go birding. It is also huge. What we have done is to maximize birding and minimize driving by designing a tour that is literally a west-to-east slice across the state. It begins on the coast, takes us through several mountain ranges, then across the Central Valley and to the Sage Brush desert of Mono Lake. This is a photo of the huge Giant Sequoias at Calaveras Big Trees State Park in the western Sierra.
