Mono Lake, the eastermost site we visit, is in a desert sink. The lake evaporates and concentrates salts to high levels. This provides habitat for huge numbers of brine flies and brine shrimp, food for the hundreds of thousands of Eared Grebes, Wilson's Phalaropes, and California Gulls!
