The captivating little island of Marken made a nice place for birding and lunch. It's now accessible by causeway from Amsterdam, a boon for tourism (as the "free tasting" sign on the local cheese shop hints), and it's a great place to watch for waterfowl and other birds in the Markenmeer, which opens to the North Sea. On the island of Texel, another beloved birding spot, a new modern-style blind for birders has been built by the government. Fancy! (Photo by guide Godfried Schreur.)
