The Utcubamba (meaning "cotton plain") region was inhabited by the Chachapoya, or "cloud people" before and during the Inca period. While they farmed the river valley, their ceremonial sites were often built atop a hill, or, in some cases, on the side of a hill, as illustrated by the ruins of Macro, visible from our route to Leimebamba.
